Ovagen is sold as a member of the Khavinson 'Cytogen' range - the chemically synthesised short-peptide half of the St Petersburg bioregulator programme, as opposed to the 'Cytomax' organ-extract capsules. It is marketed for liver and gastrointestinal support, as an oral or sublingual supplement and, on the grey market, as a lyophilised powder for injection. Two quite different products share the name and must be kept apart: this peptide, and a veterinary follicle-stimulating hormone preparation also called Ovagen that is used for superovulation in sheep and cattle and which accounts for essentially the entire indexed literature under the term 1. Ovagen the peptide is not an approved medicine anywhere in the EU or US; the oral products are widely stated to be registered in Russia as BAD (biologically active food supplements), a notification regime with no efficacy assessment, which PeptideX could not confirm from outside Russia. It is also distinct from the natural bovine-liver extract capsule in the same programme (marketed under other names), which is a different preparation.

This is a short entry. There is little or no published research on this compound, so there is correspondingly little to report. Empty dosing or reconstitution sections mean no credible figures exist — not that they were left out.

Mechanism of action

Ovagen is presented within the standard doctrine of the Khavinson bioregulator programme 4: a short peptide, said to correspond to the active fragment of a liver-tissue extract, is claimed to enter cell nuclei and direct tissue-specific gene expression 3, thereby restoring liver and gut function. The synthetic liver member of the series that does have an indexed literature is Livagen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala); Ovagen is sold alongside it with the same mechanistic claim and a shorter, supplier-stated sequence.

The general objections to the programme apply with full force, and an extra one is specific to Ovagen. A tri- or tetrapeptide has no folded structure with which to make the several simultaneous contacts that sequence-specific DNA recognition requires, and no route to selective liver targeting has ever been described - fragments of a few residues are chemically indistinguishable from the ordinary breakdown products of protein turnover found throughout the body. On top of that, the identity of the molecule being sold cannot be taken as settled: the sequence reaches the buyer from supplier material rather than from any published characterisation, and there is no study of Ovagen by name against which to check it 12. This is a hypothesis attached to a product of unverified composition, not a mechanism.

What the research shows

There is no evidence for Ovagen the peptide. No controlled trial, no independent animal study and no pharmacokinetic or safety data have been published under the name. The PubMed footprint that a search returns belongs to an unrelated veterinary follicle-stimulating hormone product of the same name 1, and ClinicalTrials.gov holds no registered study 2. There is no basis for stating that Ovagen does anything measurable in a human liver.

Research in humans

No published human study of Ovagen the peptide. No trial, no case series, no pharmacokinetic or tolerability data 12. Liver-support claims made for it on retail pages are borrowed from the general bioregulator theory and from the literature on the injectable liver extract and on the related synthetic peptide Livagen, none of which is a study of this product.

Animal and lab research

No published animal study of Ovagen by name. The reproduction and superovulation papers that surface in a database search concern a veterinary FSH preparation called Ovagen and have nothing to do with a liver peptide 1.

Caveats. There is nothing to appraise for the product itself. Beyond that, the composition is only supplier-stated and unconfirmed by any published characterisation; the whole mechanistic case rests on one research programme with a commercial interest and no independent replication; and the name is shared with an unrelated veterinary hormone, so uncritical literature searches will attach the wrong evidence to it 1.

The course length and amount simply track the capsule count or vial size and the generic 'course' format the whole bioregulator line is marketed under; neither has a pharmacokinetic or clinical basis, and the identity of the peptide being dosed is itself only supplier-stated.
