Third-party testing, and what it proves

Research-peptide sellers publish a laboratory report and call the product “third-party tested”. The report is usually genuine. It answers a narrower question than the badge suggests — and this page explains which one, and who the labs are.

This is not an accusation against the laboratories. The testing services below are real and the labs are generally careful to state what their results do and do not cover. The gap this page is about opens between what a seller pays to test and what a buyer reads into a “tested” badge.

Two different documents both called a “COA”

Peptides are synthesised as bulk active ingredient, very often at contract manufacturers in Asia, and shipped with a manufacturer’s certificate of analysis — that maker’s own batch data on its own bulk lot. By the time the material reaches a retail vial it has usually been repackaged, relabelled and often re-lyophilised by intermediaries, and that original certificate — tied to the bulk lot, not to your vial — rarely travels with it.

So the document a buyer actually sees is a reseller’s third-party test: the seller takes one finished vial, sends it to an independent lab, pays per test, and publishes the result. That is a genuine control step. It is also the marketing asset. The one thing it is not is a test of the batch by someone who chose the sample — the lab tests the single vial it is sent.

What a published report usually covers — and does not

The clearest evidence for this is a lab’s own price list, because it shows which analyses are in the base test and which are extra. Janoshik’s base peptide test is HPLC: identity, amount, and purity. Endotoxin, sterility, heavy metals, net peptide content, contamination screening and pH are each a separately-priced add-on.

A report labelled “third-party tested” therefore typically shows purity, identity and quantity, and — unless the seller paid for and published the extras — says nothing about:

Purity is also not identity. As one lab puts it, a purity number without a paired mass-spectrometry identity check “is an incomplete answer” — a high figure can belong to the wrong molecule.

How the reports are used to sell

Described neutrally, because the practices are ordinary marketing: a single flattering report left up as standing proof of quality while batches turn over; batch-verification ledgers that link each lot number to a report; QR codes and verification portals that resolve on the lab’s own domain; and “third-party tested” badges used as a site-wide trust mark rather than a per-batch claim. One lab even publishes a volume-ranked list of its top testing customers — worth understanding for what it is: a lab surfacing its highest-paying vendors.

Reading a report, if you have one

Not advice on whether to use any of this — see the disclaimer. Simply what the document can and cannot tell you.

Signals that a report means something: a batch or lot number that matches the vial; a test date close to the batch; the method stated, with HPLC purity paired to a mass-spectrometry identity; and a working verification key or QR that resolves on the lab’s own domain rather than a screenshot.

Signals that it does not: one report reused across several products or many batches; no batch number, or one that does not match; purity quoted to a precision the method cannot support; a flat image with no verification key; or a “tested” badge with no report, and safety claims (sterile, low-endotoxin) with no corresponding test on it.

The laboratories

The best-known labs used in this market, with only what each states about itself. Naming them is not an endorsement, and “does not state accreditation” means exactly that — the site makes no claim, which is different from a finding that a lab is unaccredited.

Janoshik Analytical Czech Republic

The most frequently cited laboratory in this market.

Offers
A base peptide test by HPLC — identity, amount in mg per vial, and purity. Everything else is a separately-priced add-on: endotoxin (LAL), sterility (microbial enumeration), heavy metals, residual TFA, net peptide content by elemental analysis, mass-spectrometry contamination screening and pH.
Results
Calls its output a “report”, not a certificate of analysis. Each carries a task number and unique key, plus a QR code, verifiable on its own site.
Accreditation
Does not state ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation on its site. States its own scope limits plainly — for example that the standard endotoxin test is “accurate for values up to 10 EU/vial” and estimates above that.

Freedom Diagnostics Testing Tennessee, USA

Established 2023; markets to vendors on speed and public transparency.

Offers
Purity testing in which every report pairs HPLC purity with LC-MS identity — its own line is that “a purity number without identity confirmation is an incomplete answer”, because a high purity figure can belong to the wrong molecule.
Results
Issues a certificate of analysis and runs the most openly browsable public database of the labs here, searchable by accession number or company name.
Accreditation
States no accreditation on its homepage; the emphasis is independence and a public record rather than a credential.

MZ Biolabs Arizona, USA

Increasingly cited, valued for high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Offers
Certificate-of-analysis testing plus targeted metabolomics and proteomics, on instruments its site lists as a QTOF, a linear ion trap and HPLC.
Results
Issues a certificate of analysis. States on its site that it is DEA licensed.
Accreditation
States no ISO/GLP/CLIA accreditation on the page read.

ACS Laboratory Florida, USA

The peptide arm of a lab better known for cannabis and hemp testing.

Offers
HPLC purity, mass-spectrometry identity, contaminant screening, stability and molecular-weight analysis; accepts samples from all 50 states.
Results
Issues a certificate of analysis and references the ASTM D8558 peptide standard.
Accreditation
States on its own site that it is “ISO 17025 Accredited in the USA”.

Colmaric Analyticals Florida, USA

A contract research organisation serving pharma, food and cosmetics.

Offers
TLC for a quick identity check, HPLC for purity and impurities, and mass spectrometry for molecular weight and structure, across a named list of the common peptides.
Results
States its own role plainly: “a testing lab’s role is not to determine safety, effectiveness, or intended use — the focus is on analysing the material submitted.”
Accreditation
The pages read make no accreditation claim.

Chromate United States

Covers supplements, research peptides and research chemicals.

Offers
Qualitative and quantitative analysis by HPLC unless otherwise specified, plus a microbiology arm offering sterility to USP ⟨71⟩ and endotoxin quantification.
Results
Delivered through a verification portal keyed to a job number and access code.
Accreditation
None stated on the page read.
